Tigprint (pretty reports) is used via online. The main difference is that tigprint can use the Java Virtual Machine on the client PC running Portal/J. For OLE's, tigprint has access to the Active/X controls downloaded to the PC by Portal/J.
An angle I'd like to pursue, but have not yet, is having a batch job launch a URL on the Portal/J server that has everything installed on it similar to a client PC (the client Portal/J pieces are needed).
Tigprint would have to use Java only for printing in order to be able to do batch printing. Ventyx documentation implies that batch printing with tigprint could work, except for OLE's (need Active/X).
